National event to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) – 13th October 2021.

Under the guidance of Major General Sudantha Ransinghe (Retd.), Director General of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Disaster Management Centre organized hybrid webinar on “COVID-19 and systemic risks” in collaboration with The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), University of Huddersfield, UK, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and The Asian Preparedness Partnership (APP) for commemorating International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) on 13th October 2021 at the BMICH, Colombo.

Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Secretary, State Ministry of National Security and Disaster Management General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) was chief gest of this event.

 Local and international professionals and academia shared their knowledge and experiences in this national event.

National event to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) – 13th October 2021 Theme: “COVID-19 and Systemic Risks”

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 13th October 2021 as the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction to promote a global culture of disaster risk reduction. It is an opportunity given to member countries to acknowledge the progress being made toward reducing disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2020. In 2016, with the UN Secretary General launching “The Sendai Seven Campaign” to promote each of the seven targets over seven years. The target selected for 2021 is Target F: “Substantially enhance international cooperation to developing countries through adequate and sustainable support to complement their national actions for implementation of the present Framework by 2030.” Accordingly, this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) will be commemorated on 13th October 2021 based on Target “F” of the Sendai Framework on the core theme of, “ONLY TOGETHER... CAN WE SAVE THE PLANET”.
