The Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project (CRIWMP) implemented by the Ministry of Irrigation with the technical contribution of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is being implemented under three (3) identified river basins. With the objective of strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers in the dry zone to climate vulnerability and extreme events, under this project a workshop on "Strengthening Flood Early Warning System and Divisional Preparedness plans in Malwathu Oya, Yan Oya and Mi Oya river basins" was held on 23rd December 2022 at Heritage hotel in Anuradhapura.
This workshop was aimed at strengthening the flood early warning systems and also reviewing the level of disaster preparedness of the relevant Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) of the districts of Anuradhapura, Mannar, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Trincomalee and Vavuniya in order, to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable smallholder farmers residing closer to the said river basins.
The workshop was successfully completed with the participation of Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe- Director General of Disaster Management Centre, other senior directors and nominated participants representing District Disaster Management Coordinating Units (DDMCUs), National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC – national and divisional level), Irrigation Department, Ministry of Irrigation, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and civil society organizations from Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Vavuniya, Mannar, Puttalam and Trincomalee districts.
